My 50th Year
(2009) My latest body of work explores the cumulative effect of small, daily actions – a parallel to making thousands of stitches or weaving thousands of beads. I am moved by apparently mundane experiences that are, over time, greater than the sum of their parts. “My 50th Year,” part of this body of work, is made of 366 pieces of beadwork I wove, one per day, beginning on the day after my 49th birthday and completed on the day I turned 50. In addition to beads, the other primary material used in this piece are pages of daily journals I kept when I was a teenager. The piece is an expression of how we incrementally age and grow each day over the course of our lives.

Using needle and thread with a variety of materials, I create self-supported, three-dimensional forms that evoke movement and energy. I am happiest with slow, contemplative processes that allow – in fact, require – time to examine and think. What excites me about working in three dimensions is exploring the relationship between negative and positive space. A tension develops between a hole and the physical material pressing against it. I am compelled to reveal this tension and transform commonplace materials into unexpected shapes. Thank you for visiting my Web site. I would love to hear from you! – Tina Koyama | ||
